Thankfully Westbeach was crazy enough to allow us to not only give suggestions and feedback, but allowed us to pretty much design what ever we wanted for the "Phat Wakes" board short in their spring 2006 line. This might sound easy, however we quickly found out that it could be more complicated than you would think.
First we lined up all our favorite shorts with the plan to rob all the things we liked from each, as this seemed like the logical thing to do. After this we sent in our (?) ideas and waited patentantly for the concept drawings. One Problem. The concept drawings arrived and the shorts looked just like every other pair of shorts we already had. Did we really want our model to be like everything else on the market, don't we want the short to reflect our unique personalities here at Phat Wakes. It was time to reinvent the wheel for the board short industry and ask for what we really wanted.
Not sure if Westbeach liked what we did next, but we decided to go right back to the drawing board. The truth is my favorite pairs of shorts to wear on the water are always the ones that I am not supposed to be wearing in the water anyways. Shorts like camo cargos and thick kaki's, shorts that take forever to dry, but at least I looked unique on the water. This is important because at the end of the day, we just want to add a little extra style while on the water. We have always been forced to wear surf shorts and existing water designs. The reality is, wakeboarding and wakeskating is simply a street driven style on the water, similar to snowboarding and skateboarding. So the question was, why are we wearing these surfer style bathing suits anyways?
None the less it became clear what we needed to do next. We designed a street influenced short for the water. Regular pocket designs and added zippers, belt loops, thicker than a normal surf short however still dry's quick, hide a key pocket in the rear, blue jean style rear pockets and so on... Basically the street style for the water we had been dreaming about. And this was important as wake sports have come along way in the past couple of years and it's time for the riders to start letting people know what we are all about.
So... buy them, enjoy them and let people know... Yes these shorts are for the water... Yes you could wear them to work...Yes they are great for>>>>>>everything!
Special thanks to everyone at Westbeach who worked on the short and we hope you are as excited about the model as we are. |
